Summary of Initiatives – Textiles
- First Eri Silk Village launched in Meghalaya: Launch of Umden-Diwon was declared as the first Eri Silk Village in Meghalaya on 12th February 2021 by the Textile Department of Meghalaya. The declaration was made in the presence of Textiles Minister Banteidor Lyngdoh, Nongpoh MLA Mayralborn Syiem, Commissioner & Secretary (Textiles), F. R Kharkongor, Secretary (Textiles), FM Dopth, Ri Bhoi Deputy Commissioner, R M Kurbah, Director Textiles, besides other dignitaries, and weavers and spinners.
- Inauguration of the Integrated Textiles Tourism Complex: Textiles Minister Smriti Zubin Irani inaugurated the laying of the foundation stone for the Integrated Textiles Tourism Complex in Nongpoh, Ri Bhoi District on August 2019. The Complex aims at both augmenting and leveraging the textile-based tourism by setting up the necessary infrastructure, comprising of traditional style cottages, restaurants, food court and emporium, for showcasing and marketing the diverse & rich handloom products of the State. The complex will offer opportunity for tourists seeking unique experiences through leisure activities revolving around handloom and textile production
- Implementation of the Integrated Scheme for Development of Eri Silk Industry in Ri-Bhoi District: Various forms of assistance are provided to Eri farmers, such as financial assistance for raising of Eri Food plants, assistance for construction of Rearing House, Supply of Rearing equipment, Financial assistance for the establishment of Eri Private Graineurs, the establishment of a Cocoon Bank, besides Equipment support for the establishment of a Modern Spinning Unit, as a precursor to value addition.
- Implementation of Cluster Development Programme in the Handloom Sector: Under this scheme, 72 Handloom Cluster have been set up in every district covering 5307 weavers. The target groups are the traditional weavers, who are encouraged to form Self Help Groups, with the objective of enhancing the productivity of Handloom fabrics in the Cluster. Weavers are also provided financial assistance for construction of work sheds and for setting up of yarn Banks in their own village clusters, to enable easy procurement of yarns at Mill Gate Price. The scheme is also providing job opportunities for unemployed local youth.
- Signing of MoU with Ministry of Textiles on August 2019 to take Samarth – Scheme for Capacity Building in Textile Sector (SCBTS) forward: 7,200 youth in Meghalaya will be imparted skill development training in apparel & garmenting, textiles and handloom sectors under the ‘Samarth’ scheme of the Government of India, in a joint venture of the Central and State Government.
