Shillong, February 25, 2025: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma today said that the climate crisis is not just an environmental challenge, but a fundamental issue of justice and equity.

Speaking at the Climate Investments Coalition for the Global South in New Delhi, he said that those who have contributed the least to climate change are suffering the most, and it is essential to address this disparity.

He said that Meghalaya as a state have taken the climate concerns seriously, and have chart out intervention to mitigate. He informed the gathering on the traditional conservation knowledge and practices which are being adopted to address the global crisis.

“Our communities are deeply rooted to nature, their knowledge about conservation, protection of natural resources are being widely promoted and adopted for sustainable solution,” he said.

Talking about erratic monsoons, increased disasters, affecting lives, he spoke in length on the unpredictable rainfall patterns, extreme weather, which has impacted agriculture and livelihood for millions globally, and Meghalaya is not an exception.

“Climate change threatens economic stability and future growth, making it essential to realign global climate platforms with the realities of the Global South,” he said, while informing on government’s commitment to sustainability.

He said that Meghalaya is leading forest conservation and community led environmental initiatives with active collaboration and partnership with the community.

“We are implementing programme like Green Meghalaya, Payment for Ecosystem Services (PES) to encourage community partnership in conservation of forest and protection of catchment areas, rejuvenation of water sources,” he said, while underscoring the importance of green growth policies of the state that has been integrated with the economic development and ecological responsibilities.

He also informed the gathering on the investments being made in renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, and climate-resilient infrastructure.

Speaking on importance of collaboration and cooperation among the Northeastern states in addressing climate-related issues, he said that the region’s unique geography makes it vulnerable to extreme weather events, which can have far-reaching consequences.

“For instance, a severe weather event in Arunachal Pradesh can affect Assam, and rising water levels in the Brahmaputra river can cause flooding not only in Assam but also in western parts of Meghalaya,” he said, while informing that to effectively tackle these challenges, the Northeastern states has to work together, sharing their expertise and resources to develop strategies for mitigating the impacts of climate change.

He also spoke on the potential benefits of forging partnerships with countries in South and Southeast Asia, particularly through the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC).

He also informed the gathering on budrot disease that has affected arecanut plantations in the Garo Hills and Western Khasi Hills region. “This disease has not only affected the local economy but has send alarm bells ringing on the need for sustainable agricultural practices and climate-resilient farming systems,” he stressed.

The Climate Investments Coalition for the Global South (CICS) organised by the State government in collaboration with National Law University Meghalaya is aimed to provide platform to drive discussions on mobilizing climate finance, accelerating green investments, and strengthening South-South cooperation. The climate programme will be held annually in the month of September-October in Shillong.

The programme also showcased Meghalaya’s model of sustainable development and create pathways for scaling similar solutions across the Global South.

Launch of “Restart Meghalaya Mission’ on 15th August 2020

The Mission comprise of a series of interventions to support farmers and entrepreneurs by enabling them to build growth-promoting basic infrastructure and services. Under this Mission, 1917iTEAMS – the IT Platform aimed at enabling farmers access to agricultural information, crop advisories and markets will be expanded logistically through induction of another 100 vehicles.

Creation of the Directorate of Food Processing on May 2018

With the objective of seizing opportunities in the sector and the untapped food processing potential of the state for uplifting the livelihoods of farmers and value chain actors, the Government of Meghalaya created the Directorate of Food Processing (DFP) as a one-stop agency to handle all matters relating to food processing in the state and to deal with all central government Ministries and Agencies (viz. Ministries of Agriculture, and Food Processing, SFAC, NCDC, NABARD, etc.) in all matters pertaining to the development of agricultural food processing sector.

First Ever Farmer’s Parliament held on 4th - 5th December 2018

The parliament was organised by the state department of agriculture in collaboration with Meghalaya Basin Development Authority (MBDA) and the Hill Farmers' Union (HFU). As a step toward the promotion of new technologies, HFU with the support of Meghalaya government, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for a Machine Learning Artificial Intelligence App for farmers — called Nongrep (nongrep in Khasi language means farmer) with its software partner Impetus Solutions from Hyderabad — as a social innovation project. This app will address matters of farm aggregations, soil health and disease identification, crop yield, farm produce pickups, market linkage and retail sellers app.

Launch of the Farmer’s Portal on 7th May 2018

The Meghalaya Famers’ Portal (www.megfarmers.gov.in) of the Department of Agriculture is a platform for farmers to seek any information related to agriculture. Detailed information on farmers’ insurance, agricultural storage, crops, extension activities, seeds, pesticides, farm machineries, etc. is provided. Details of fertilizers, market prices, package and practices, programmes, welfare schemes are also given.

  • Meghalaya has been selected for the Commendation award in 'Total foodgrains Category-III' for 2017-18. The award consists of a citation and an amount of Rs. 1 crore.
  • Meghalaya Agriculture Department and the MIE Meghalaya Team won the '7th eNabling North East (eNorth East) Award 2019-20' in the 'Agriculture & Rural Development' category for 1917 iTEAMS project which is a project in collaboration with Digital India.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi awarded Meghalaya on May 2018 the Krishi Commendation Award for the year 2015-16, in recognition of the commendable foodgrains production achieved by the State.
  • Meghalaya has been adjudged the Most Improved Small State in the category of Agriculture and received the India Today – "The State of the States” Award on 23rd November 2018.
