Shillong | June 23 | Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma today inaugurated the production unit of “She-Rise”, a Zero Waste Period Mission at Laitkroh in East Khasi Hills District.
This initiative, launched by the Shubham Charitable Association under the Green Meghalaya Mission, is the first of its kind in the North East region focused on the production of reusable sanitary pads.
“She-Rise is not just a production unit, it is a movement that promotes menstrual hygiene, protects our environment, and empowers our women. By offering safe, affordable, and eco-friendly alternatives, we are addressing a vital public health issue while building resilient communities,” the chief minister said.
The project received support under the Chief Minister’s Special Grant (CMSG) an amount of ₹5 lakh, which was used for procurement of necessary machinery and equipment. So far, the initiative has created employment opportunities for over 25 women.
Lauding the efforts of the Shubham Charitable Association, the chief minister informed that the project will be scaled up and will be taken across Meghalaya. “We are committed to expanding this initiative to other parts of the State and encouraging more women-led organizations to join this cause. Not only will this create jobs, but it will also help normalize conversations around menstrual hygiene and ensure that no girl is held back because of lack of access to basic sanitary care,” he said.
He also informed that the government is investing in vending machines for sanitary pads in schools and plans to introduce reusable sanitary pads across educational institutions in partnership with the Education and Social Welfare departments.
“Menstrual hygiene is a fundamental health right. We are working to break taboos, promote eco-conscious choices, and support women’s dignity with sustainable solutions,” said Puspa Bajaj, the founder of Shubham Charitable Association.
She also informed that they have been looking for local alternatives to fabrics including bamboo and banana fibre.
